Russian teaching genius

russian_alphabetI can recommend a talented teacher with a very different approach to language learning. He might actually be offended if you called him “teacher” for he more of a cut-around-difficulties master than anything else. His style is exemplified by the “Bluff your way in xxxxx” series.  No subtleties of Russian pronunciation, none of “o” vs. “a” stuff, no dwelling on pseudo-issues such as famous “soft consonants”. But he will show you a few tricks of how to speak clearly and distinctly with minimal vocabulary and no grammar beyond what’s obvious.  No case endings nightmare. None or very little textbook stuff. Instead he will help you notice extensive similarity between English and Russian. He will point out to familiar words obscured by all these Russian prefixes and suffixes and more →

Vadim the accountant

VLUU L100, M100 / Samsung L100, M100Vadim has been keeping me out of trouble with tax authorities for the last few years. His specialization however is corporate accounting and business registration. The latter includes obtaining dozens of permits per business entity. Recently I spoke to a hotel manager who said his Holiday Inn needed 138 inspections and permits.  If you plan to do any  serious work in Russia, first get me to assess the market and to give you an overview of the toils and troubles awaiting you. Chances are you’ll have enough sense to stop there. If not, Vadim will do the paperwork, and help you in transacting with tax, pension fund, health and safety, and numerous other controlling and supervising bodies.

He does not speak English and is kind of slow in responding e-mails. Better contact him though me. Write to paul_voytinsky@yahoo.com

Information hunter supreme

Either I’m a slow-whit and a retard, or Alexandra is an information-search genius. She finds in minutes what takes me hours to locate. Examples of she has found for me or my clients:

  • Stories of undocumented locations. The most recent one was an airplane graveyard.  We showed up there and found a real airport complete with a real military jet plane that gave a ride to my clients, British movie makers from Discovery.  more →

Alla the environmental law expert

Presenting Alla Dudnikova, a lawyer specializing in clumsy and convoluted Russian environmental law, and even more involved and incomprehensible practice.

She also regularly handles divorce cases. Divorced me fairly painlessly.

A naturally helpful person who will baby anyone under her care. Not the sort of a lawyer who will want an upfront fee per word uttered.

Lots of connections in all areas of life but especially in art, travel, medicine, and aviation.

An asset to Russian bride seekers too, and has infinite patience assisting this type of traveller. Several times I asked Alla to pass around profiles of my clients, organize meetings in a form that does not put anyone on the spot, or provide character assessments. Not that it helped any but that’s just the nature of the Russian bride undertaking.

An avid traveller. Talk to her if you want to integrate into local life by participating in hiking, biking, canoeing, or horse riding in Russia.

Very passable English, and I can always step in if required.

Write to the webmaster with a note “For Alla”. She responds fast and usually to the point.

Criminal lawyer

nargisNargis, a criminal lawyer but I take most of my – so far minor – legal questions to her and invariably get a sensible answer or specific help, usually in the form of guidance in writing effective letters.

I would also like to remark on her courage. I’ve seen her walking up to an agitated  and possibly armed man with several Baltica No. 9 cans – vile stuff – in his belly to reason some sense into him. And she did.

She started back in the Soviet days as an idealistically-motivated criminal investigator. Specialized in cases involving dead often mutilated bodies. About 10 years ago switched into law.

Highly mobile. Guess she has to be given that her clients tend to be in pre-court confinement all over central Russia. Drivers like a maniac though.

Speak German. I can always relay messages and translate on the fly.
