More words of wisdom from the webmaster: Car rental can be false economy This is especially so if you are new to Russia. A car rented from a western-managed company (I doubt you will have patience, if not the ability, to deal with a local operator) will cost you about $100/day. Gasoline will be another $10-20. And what value would you put on risks? Plus, not knowing the environment, you are likely to pay premium prices for food and accommodation. While $200 may sound like a lot and make you think of renting a car, remember to subtract the cost of renting, gasoline, traffic fines etc. from our daily rate. Don't forget to factor in risks big and small, and time lost figuring your way. Depending on your plans and needs, hiring us may even SAVE you money. Hiring a driver is especially recommended when you travel as a small group. |

Car rental establishment that offer good cars to "rich foreigners" are are easy to find. Many world-wide agencies are represented in Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports. The cheaper part of the market, where Russian made cars are offered at rates that an average Muscovite can afford, is harder to find. Thus this compilation of car rental agencies in Moscow which will offer you a vehicle at no more that $40/day.
In additional to usual disclaimers to the effect that I provide information etc. I would like to mention that
(a) Attempting to drive in Russia is a form of suicidal behaviour.
(b) Expensive car rental agencies don't charge extra for nothing. They are reliable, flexible, and easy to deal with. If you value your time and energy, deal with the westerner-oriented car rental part of the market.
Once again, as a travel industry worker with a semblance of responsibility I cannot recommend you attempt to drive in Russia yourself.
