A
long time ago, before the new railroad link to Paveletskaya and
Leningradsky. The description will be updated soon.
From Sheremetyevo to Moscow by public transit transportation
1 - Exit the arrivals hall. (Click here
for the floor plan of the arrivals hall in Sheremetyevo-2 airport)
2 - Board one of the buses or mini-buses in
front of the arrivals hall. Pay the driver in cash. The fare is no more than $1.50, in
roubles. I'll check the prices and bus numbers and take some pictures next time I happen
to be at the airport. Remember to change a few dollars into roubles at the airport. Don't
change too much because in the city you'll get 3-4% more on the
exchange and perhaps save on service charges too.
3 - The bus will take you to the nearest
Metro (subway) station (Rechnoi Vokzal - top of the green line or Planernaya - pink line).
You will not miss the metro station because most of the passengers will be getting off
there - just follow the crowd.
4 - Take a look at the map of the Moscow
Metro System on the www.studyrussian.com
site. If you are renting
my apartment, the green line will take you directly to
Metro Novokuznetskaya.
5 - Buy a subway card (125?? roubles, or about $5 for 10
rides). Insert it into the gate. Fellow passengers and attendants will
help you if needed.
6 - Ride to the required station.
Watch your valuables. Pickpockets, generally NOT a
problem in Moscow, hunt for disoriented newcomers. Shit tends to
happen in the first few hours. Or when you are on your way out. If
hassled, walk away. If prevented from doing so, MAKE A LOT OF NOISE
and SCREAM "MILITIA!!" Street
crime is generally NOT a problem but there are some individuals who seem to attract
trouble. I had one guest who had four attempts on his wallet (one successful) on his first
day! Others live here for years without a hint of trouble.
The above exercise is not recommended for first time
travellers, people with a lot of luggage, or those who come here for business rather than
to look for adventure. If unsure, do arrange to be met at the airport.

From my mailbo. Received June 7, 2007
As a big fan of Russia I found your webpage a
tremendous help for budget travellers.
You said that you are unsure about the bus numbers
from/to Sheremetyevo airport. I just returned from
Russia and while I was travelling inside the country I
had to do this bus ride a few times so for your
information:
Bus number 851 from SVO-1 via SVO-2 to Rechnoi Vokzal.
This is almost always a long Ikarus bus (yes, I am a
proud Hungarian and so is the bus....) with a plenty
of space.
Cost: A ride costs 25 roubles and if you have a big
suitcase then they will cahrge you another 25
(sometimes not, I think it depends on the driver's
mood). The charges are written on the driver's door.
Time: From SVO-2 to Rechnoi Vokzal is minimum 45
minutes, depending on traffic, time and date....
From SVO-1 you can count with 1 hour minimum...
Attention: If you want to make this trip the other way
around, from Rechnoi Vokzal to SVO-2 you need to
calculate with longer times!!!!! The bus takes a
slightly different route and will go to SVO-1 first.
So do not get off there. Last week in the morning this
ride took me 2 hours..... so allow plentiful time.
Rechnoi vokzal: It is impossible to miss since almost
all the passengers get off there plus it is the end
station of the bus. You will see lots of buses around.
Metro entrance is about 50-100 meters. Also impossible
to miss.
From Sheremetyevo there is another bus to Planernaya.
The number is 817. I did not try this but I assume the
same rules apply.
Also there is bus 851C (red numbers) which is a faster
version of 851 and has the same route with less stops.
However, this is a smaller sized bus and almost
impossible to board with a bigger sized baggage. But
if you travel light it is a good solution. I did not
try it due to heavy luggages.....
All these buses (except for 851C which comes not that
often) come in every 10-15 mins or so....
I wanted to take photos but my good memories of Russia
overwhelmed me at departure and I forgot :-))))
Anyway, I hope you can use some of this info somehow.
Keep up the good work with the site....
Take care,

"as is". This trip can only be recommended to experienced travellers
wtihout luggage, no fixed plans, and no or but light flight fatigue
syndrome...
To join [travel to - PV]
Staritsa from
Cheremetyevo (airport): easy: take one Marchroutka (white or
yellow minibus, every 15 min.) to join Metro Pianetaia (line 7), in 20
minutes. Cost: 50 roubles. Take metro (15 roubles), three stops:
Choukinskaia. There, try to find a normal white bus that drives you to
Staritsa or Rjew (twice a day, morning and afternoon), following in
three hours a countryside road trough Volokolamsk and then small
beautiful villages. Cost: 277 roubles.
If not on time (put here timetable) [Leaves 10:20am every day and
4pm most days; tickets often need to be ordered in advance - PV], take
one of those little hotels around Pianetaia [Planernaya - PV] station
for the night. At Staritsa, call Pasha to fetch you. 25 usd/an hour. [A
rate which is applied to very few clients/projects; in most cases it
will be $35 - PV] It takes him one hour to join you horseback riding
[Probably meant "to meet you with a horse. But no, it takes at least one
hour to ride from Staritsa to my dacha. Another hour to get to Staritsa.
Plus bushing and saddling the animals. I'd say a three-hour cycle at
least. - PV]. So count two. Or walk about one hour [more like two - PV]
along the Volga on its left side towards Nord-East; expect to cross a
river without bridge. Total: for almost
13 usd, [plus $100 for the hotel in Moscow if you don't make it
to the bus] you cover a really rewarding and beautiful distance !
If Pasha comes and fetch you at the airport, it will takes him 5
hours x 2, will ask you to drive yourself a dangerous car (because tired
or scheduled driving license) on that infernal highway Moscow - St
Petersburg till Tver and cost you 250
usd (6500 roubles !). But at least, you get strong feelings ! So,
if you are absolutely on need of that...
